#Springsteen Songs: The Ties That Bind

‘The Ties That Bind’ is het openingsnummer van de dubbelaar ‘The River’ uit 1980. ‘The Ties That Bind’ gaat net als veel andere nummers op ‘The River’ over het volwassen worden, relaties aan gaan, het huwelijk en de bijbehorende verantwoordelijkheden. Niet weglopen voor de verantwoordelijkheden die horen bij het volwassen worden maar ze aan pakken. Want dat zijn de aanknopingspunten die je samen moet brengen.

Springsteen is voor dit nummer misschien wel beïnvloed door het nummer ‘I Walk The Line’ van Johnny Cash. Waarin Cash dezelfde thema’s behandeld. Het nummer ‘I Walk The Line’ bevat de volgende zin “I keep the ends out for the tie that binds, because you’re mine, I walk the line” Springsteen zingt: “You walk cool, but darlin’, can you walk the line, and face the ties that bind”. Een mooi toeval.

Muzikaal gezien zou het zo een nummer van The Byrds kunnen zijn. Maar door de toevoegingen van het Glockenspiel en de mooie saxofoon solo van Clarence Clemons is het toch weer een typisch Springsteen en The E Street Band nummer. ‘The Ties That Bind’ was in eerste instantie in 1979 de titel van het album dat Springsteen toen inleverde bij zijn platenbazen. Maar hij was nog niet tevreden over het album en trok het terug om er een jaar later een dubbelaar van te maken getiteld ‘The River’.
