#Springsteen Songs: Kitty’s Back

Kitty’s Back is het derde nummer van Springsteen’s album ‘The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle’ uit 1973. Springsteen’s meest jazzy nummer, met in het midden van het nummer alle ruimte om te improviseren wat The E Street Band als geen ander kan. ‘Kitty’s Back’ gaat over een meisje uit een dorp die haar man verlaat voor een man uit de stad. In 1974 vertelde Springsteen dat hij het idee voor dit nummer kreeg via een neon licht reclame van een populaire stripclub langs de ‘Jersey Shore’. Van 1978 tot de Kerstshows in 2000 is dit nummer niet live gespeeld. Sinds die Kerstshows haalt Springsteen dit nummer met enige regelmaat van stal.

De bovenstaande video laat het improviserende deel van het nummer geweldig zien. Eerst is het de beurt aan Charlie Giordano op het hammond orgel, dan is het de beurt aan de blazerssectie. Gevolgd door het piano spel van Professor Roy Bittan gevolgd door een scheurende gitaar solo van Springsteen zelf. Na al dat instrumentale geweld zingt Springsteen in deze versie ook nog even een stukje ‘Pretty Woman’ van Roy Orbison.
