ThijsTwee weken geleden zag ik John Prine in Paradiso in Amsterdam. En nog steeds ben ik erg onder de indruk van dit concert. De afgelopen weken ook veel naar hem geluisterd en allerlei nummers van hem ontdekt die al snel tot mijn favorieten gingen behoren. Zoals de plaat van de week van deze week. Het prachtige ‘Taking A Walk’ van het album ‘Fair & Square’ uit 2005.
There’s a girl in the white house
I don’t even know her name
Her disheveled appearance
Speaks volumes of shame
It’s an embarrassing situation
But a situation just the same
The way she walks on others
And never takes the blame
Upsets my constitution
Beyond its mortal frame
O a-ha
I’m taking a walk
I’m going outside
I’m watching the birds
I’m just getting by
Prine vertelde over dit stukje in het nummer dat het een politiek statement is:
“To me she’s, like, Miss Liberty. I just think she’s looking pretty shabby these days, to the rest of the world and everything. If this is the way you’ve got to run a democracy, it’s pretty shabby.”
En dit komt uit 2005 maar 13 jaar later nog steeds actueel, jammer genoeg.
