De 25 van 2018: 17. J.P. Harris – Sometimes Dogs Bark At Nothing

JP Harris geboren in Montgomery, Alabama in het jaar 1983, na wat omzwervingen via Las Vegas, NV, Oakland, CA, en Halifax in de staat Vermont kwam hij in Nashville, TN terecht. De plaat ‘Sometimes Dogs Bark At Nothing’ is de derde plaat van Harris en opent met ‘JP’s Florida Blues’ gaat over Harris zijn drank verleden: “This track is special to me in many ways.” “Not only was it fun as hell to record, but for me it’s a humorous way to process a very real and very dark stretch of time from my past. Once I was far enough away from it, the story became a little easier to recount in a near- comical fashion.” Daarnaast maakt Harris zich zorgen over dat de vrouwelijke muzikanten zo weinig worden gedraaid op de Country zenders op het mooie ‘Lady In The Spotlight’. Het titelnummer heeft die fijne John Prine verhalende zangstijl een grappig nummer over dat sommige dingen soms gewoon gebeuren. Zo blaffen honden weleens uit het niets en beginnen jonge kinderen ineens te schelden.

Een van de mooiste en meest persoonlijke nummers is ‘When I Quit Drinking’. Harris bezingt hier zijn verslaving aan alcohol in de hoop zo verteld hij op zijn website dat het anderen gaat helpen om van deze verslaving af te komen. Harris levert met ‘Sometimes Dogs Bark At Nothing’, een fijne plaat af met mooie persoonlijke nummers. Of zoals Harris het zelf zegt:

“I’m just hoping that me coming to the table without gimmicks or cool-looking clothes or boot cut jeans, just the dirt bag guy I am with a tank top and a pair of boots on, is enough to just get people into the music.”
